#Belfasty Day & Terry Fox being held on Monday, Sept. 18:
#Belfasty Day:
It’s that time again. It’s our first #Belfasty Day!!!! This learning experience is for all of our Belfast Citizens to come to together and show how much perseverance they have as they tackle deep and meaningful learning challenges. The theme for our first #Belfasty Day is SUPERHEROES to honour the brave and harrowing acts of Canada’s beloved Terry Fox. Afterwards, we will all meet as a community for our Assembly and then run for Terry.

Terry Fox:
Starting at 11:30, students will attend a short assembly in the gym to learn about Terry Fox, his journey and the significance behind why we are running. At the start of lunch we will all go outside for a Belfast Terry Fox Run.  *In honour of Terry, students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite superhero for the whole day. *Please send an extra snack & a waterbottle this day in addition to your child's regular snack and lunch. We will have a chance to eat during the assembly before the big run.
Please NOTE: The Terry Fox Run is a non-competitive event where people get together as individuals, families, and groups to raise money for cancer research in Terry's name. It is a day of celebrating Terry's legacy and helping to keep alive his dream of finding a cure for cancer.
Toonies for Terry:
We are also raising money for the Terry Fox Foundation, and collecting ‘Toonies for Terry’ or any other donation that you may wish to send in.

Winter Musical - Auditions Next Week:
Mr. Symington is already planning for our student performances this year. He will be rehearsing grade 3-6 students to perform in December, and Kindergarten - grade 2 students will be involved in a spring show of their own. We have a very small gym and we hope by doing 2 shows that all parents who wish to attend an evening show will be able to get a ticket and attend. It also gives our younger students more of an opportunity to shine!

Auditions for the main cast will take place next week Wednesday September 20th at 3:30 pm in the gym. The audition will take approximately an hour and students will be available for parent pick up at 4:30 pm. Students who are selected for main cast roles will rehearse 2 lunch times and 2 times after school per week schedule as follows:  Monday (afterschool 3:30-4:30), Tuesday (during Lunchtime), Wednesday (afterschool 3:30-4:30) & Thursday (during lunchtime). If you have any questions about the rehearsal schedule please contact Mr. Symington at rysymington@cbe.ab.ca .

Winter Musical:
This years musical is Aesop’s Musical Foibles. Poor Aesop has a menagerie of voices in running through his mind.  His classic storybook characters like the resentful Fox, the egomaniac Hare, the sluggish Tortoise, and the zen-like Grasshopper come to life in hysterical conversations that only Aesop can see and hear.  With his mind crowded with all these big personalities, Aesop can hardly think straight.  The only way to peace of mind and freedom is to let out the characters and share them with the world.

Lunchtime adjustments:
Our lunch time is a little shorter this year and we noticed early the first week that students are not getting much time to play by the time they drop their lunches off, put on their outside clothes and head outside. Looking forward it also makes it very hard to run clubs since the lunch period was broken into 3 chunks of roughly 15 min each. Looking ahead, these short blocks also don’t lend themselves to running clubs during the lunch hour. We’ve decided trying a new routine where students eat first then head outside for a longer period of play. Eating will take place in the gym for the first 20 minutes of lunch and then students will have a chance to play outside for the remainder of the lunch time. We’ve also noticed, and some parents have reported that a significant number of our students are not eating much of their lunches. As we get used to the new routine we are also checking in with students as we dismiss them. If it looks like they haven’t eaten their lunch we will ask them to spend a little more time at the lunch tables. The idea is to support students so that they have enough energy to last them through the afternoon. We understand that some students bring snacks for after school, or extra “just in case” snacks. The idea is not to force students to eat everything in their lunch but rather to help them make good and healthy choices that support their energy levels into the afternoon.

Fire Drill:
Today was our first fire drill practice here at Belfast School and everything went off without a hitch.  We want to thank our students for their cooperation in our fire drill practice as they were all we well behaved and promptly left the building.
